7 Things to Avoid After Having a Cosmetic Laser Treatment

Cosmetic laser treatments are one of the most effective ways to address fine lines, sun damage, uneven texture, and dullness. Whether you’ve had a CoolPeel session, an IPL treatment, or a more intensive resurfacing procedure, what you do during recovery matters just as much as the treatment itself.

Here are seven things to avoid after a cosmetic laser treatment.

1. Sun Exposure

This is the most critical rule of laser aftercare.

Laser energy creates controlled injury to the skin, leaving it significantly more photosensitive than usual. Even brief, unprotected time outdoors can cause hyperpigmentation, prolonged redness, or lasting discoloration.

For the first two weeks, minimize direct sun exposure, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, and consider a wide-brimmed hat when going outside.

2. Harsh Skincare Products

Retinoids, alpha and beta hydroxy acids, exfoliating scrubs, and strong vitamin C serums all have a place in a healthy routine, just not immediately after laser treatment.

After a procedure, the skin barrier is compromised and more permeable. Applying active ingredients during this window can cause burning and inflammation that interferes with healing. Stick to the gentle products your provider recommends until you’ve been cleared to reintroduce your regular regimen.

3. Picking or Scratching the Skin

Peeling and flaking are normal parts of recovery after most laser skin resurfacing treatments. Picking at the skin prematurely can disrupt new cell formation underneath, increase the risk of scarring, and introduce bacteria to sensitized tissue. If itching is uncomfortable, ask your provider about appropriate soothing options.

4. Intense Physical Activity

Exercise increases heart rate and body temperature, which elevates blood flow to the skin’s surface and can worsen swelling and redness. Sweating also introduces salt and bacteria that may irritate healing skin.

Most providers recommend avoiding strenuous workouts for at least 48 to 72 hours after treatment, and longer following more intensive procedures.

5. Hot Showers, Saunas, and Steam

Heat dilates blood vessels, intensifying inflammation and prolonging redness. Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs should all be avoided in the days following treatment. The advanced laser and RF treatments at Schlessinger Eye & Face are designed with recovery in mind, but even minimally invasive options require that you keep direct heat exposure away from treated skin until redness has resolved. Lukewarm water is fine for cleansing in the meantime.

6. Makeup Too Soon

Cosmetics contain fragrances, preservatives, and other ingredients that can be highly irritating to compromised skin.

Applying makeup before the skin has adequately healed can also introduce bacteria and clog pores during a critical recovery window. How long you should wait depends on the depth of your treatment. Your provider will give you a specific timeline based on what was done.

7. Skipping Follow-Up Appointments

Once your skin looks like it’s healing well, it can be tempting to skip follow-up visits. But it is essential that you do not. Follow-up appointments allow your provider to monitor progress, catch early signs of complications, and adjust your aftercare if something isn’t tracking as expected. Healing after laser treatment isn’t always linear, and staying in contact with your care team gives you the best chance of achieving the results you came in for.

If you’re still planning your treatment, reviewing how to prepare your skin before laser treatments is a worthwhile first step.
